In October 2017, we worked with the County’s largest employee union, SEIU Local 521, to sue the Trump Administration for cancelling the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Program. DACA was an immigration policy that allowed “dreamers”—undocumented young people who were brought to this country as children—to receive “deferred action” from deportation and a legal work permit.
Our lawsuit was the first DACA suit in the nation to be filed jointly by an employer and affected workers, and we quickly won an injunction temporarily stopping the cancellation of the DACA program. We took the case to the Supreme Court as part of a coalition with SEIU and several individual DACA recipients. In 2020, the Supreme Court agreed with the lower courts’ ruling that the Trump administration unlawfully ended the DACA program. The Supreme Court restored the Obama-era DACA program in full.
